First black mayor of Miami Shores, first black hire at a large Minnesota law firm, influential US ambassador’s wife to Singapore, Crystal Wagar’s list of achievements is impressive.

A lawyer by trade and mom of two, her path has not been without challenges, mostly, she feels, due to the color of her skin. That’s why she enjoyed her time in multi-cultural Singapore so much. ‘There, I was just Crystal’, she says, ‘no one cared what I looked like and being black didn’t come with the burden it does in the United States’.

But her story also sparkles with ‘Forest Gump moments’, like when, together with now husband Kirk, she was invited to Barack Obama’s inaugural ball at the White House, no doubt as a result of the couple’s tireless fundraising efforts for the President.
